Working definition

The Identity Gap is the named distance between your current-self and the needed-self — the bridge every well-formed Battle of the Week is designed to cross.

How it works

You often run on a confused identity equation: the current-self is treated as fixed, the needed-self as aspirational fog. The B-trilogy (Be You, The Real You + Be Your Real Boss + Be Your Own Limits) reverses the equation — the needed-self is what is real, and the current-self is the obsolete version that needs to be retired.

The Identity Gap is the named, written, dated distance between the two. Naming the gap is the prerequisite for designing the how — the bridge. Without naming the gap, effort stays vague — and members may climb hard on the wrong surface until Choose the Wall Before the Climb catches the misalignment.

The Identity Gap has three operational properties:

  1. It is specific. Not “be more confident” — but “the version of me that runs the call without preparing every word.”
  2. It is the upstream cause of every Battle. Battles are bridge segments. The gap is the river.
  3. It evolves. Once one gap is bridged, a new one becomes visible. The work is not to close all gaps; it is to keep one named at all times.

Layer discipline. Gap work targets Attitude and Posture — the choosable and embodied layers. Temperament is substrate to differentiate, not rewrite as identity. Personality is the slow evidence layer the gap closes over seasons. Stack map: Temperament, attitude and personality.

The image is the named distance — current-self on one side, needed-self on the other, with the gap written between them before any bridge is built. Regret-projection surfaces the line: we locate what we would regret, and we move in the opposite direction — Marie-Aude, 2026-01-30.

Your move this week

Today’s micro-action (24–72 hours):

  1. Open a blank note. Write the date.
  2. Run a 3-line regret-projection: close eyes, fast-forward to the last day, ask “what makes me proud?”
  3. Write one sentence: “My current-self is X. My needed-self is Y.”
  4. From that sentence, name the next Battle Of the Week that crosses one segment of the gap.
  5. Capture the gap-naming in your personal notes — your journal, voice memo, or wherever you track personal mechanics.
