Motivation is not the spark that starts the rep. It is the spark that arrives once you do.

Here is the part almost everyone has backwards: your brain does not run on pleasure, it runs on surprise. It learns from the gap between what it expected and what actually happened — prediction error. That is why waiting to feel ready never arrives, and why one small rep, done before the mood shows up, quietly rewrites the loop. Habit is simply that rep repeated on a cue until it stops asking your permission.

This map is habit and follow-through only. If the block dissolves in minute three, open Focus (MoC); if the block is which version of you showed up, open Identity (MoC); if you cannot name the problem at all, step up one level at the foot.

What people get wrong

  • Dopamine equals pleasure. The real signal is prediction error — surprise, not a happiness meter.
  • Detox on a timetable. The honest language is salience and expectation, not a guaranteed washout schedule.
  • Wait to feel ready. The lead rep comes first; the feeling catches up afterward.

Put it to work

Lead: Lag vs Lead Measure — move the lead before you re-check the mood.
Reps: Deliberate Practice — repetition that actually rewires.
Loop: Conditioning — name the loop you reinforce, on purpose.

Lines for the wall

Attention: Energy flows where attention goes — attention follows what you feed.
Rep first: Amateurs wait for inspiration — professionals ship the lead rep first.

Your move

Name the lag and the lead on one line. Run one lead rep before you re-check how you feel, and log the rep on your Battle or Victory Journal — the rep, not the mood. That is the whole loop.
