Abstract

Nutt, Lingford-Hughes, and Erritzøe trace forty years of the dopamine theory of addiction. The review does not deny dopamine — it asks how a model built on specific drug classes became a universal story, and what that means if you import the diagram into everyday habit talk.

Read Dopamine baseline first — map, mechanism, and Applications. This note is the scope boundary on that Atlas page. Schultz 2016 on the same Sources list covers the prediction-error mechanism.

Key findings

The authors argue the field often treated striatal dopamine as a single addiction dial while disconfirming results and drug-class differences were slow to change the mainstream story.

  • Over-generalization — early psychostimulant successes were exported into a one-size model of “addiction = dopamine.”
  • Not one curve — blunting, release, and receptor patterns differ across stimulants, opioids, alcohol, and cannabis. You do not need pharmacology homework; you need to know the meme is narrower than the literature.
  • Your habit is not SUD — this review speaks to addiction neuroscience. It does not validate wellness “detox timetables” for Netflix, sugar, or scroll — that leap lives in coaching metaphor, not in this paper.

Limits

Synthesis review — no new experiment. Use for scope and humility, not diagnosis, treatment, or proof that your input-reduction window works like a clinical washout.

When to open this

Open when a dopamine story (baseline, detox, flatness) is used as settled science for everyday behaviour — when you or someone else treats the Instagram diagram as lab fact. Curated domain trail: Habit.

Your move stays on Dopamine baseline · Applications (same Atlas page as above). Mechanism and the Schultz / Volkow anchors sit under Sources there — read those lines for prediction-error and substance-use-disorder framing before you debate scope.

Try this week: the next time you say or hear “dopamine detox” as proof, name one observable you are tracking (sleep, scroll minutes, sugar portions, focus block completed). If you cannot name it, the metaphor is running you — return to Applications and measure the line, not the slogan.
