Working definition

Conditioning is the deliberate pre-shaping of state, body, environment, and attention — installed before the situation arrives — so the version who needs to show up actually can.

How it works

Conditioning is upstream of action. The elite skier does not condition mid-descent; the work is done at the gate, in the suit, in the visualisation the night before. Three layers stack on top of each other:

  1. Situational — what does this specific moment ask of me? A morning call, a difficult conversation, a public exposure, and a Club session each demand a different state. Conditioning to brush your teeth is wasted work.
  2. Preparatory — which anchors are installed in advance so the right state can be triggered? Clothing, scent, music, posture, breathing, phrase, ritual. See Anchoring — the dedicated tool inside this doctrine.
  3. Corrective — where in my day am I being unconsciously deconditioned? Frictions, notifications, the gaze of others, collective unconscious dates (Friday 13, Valentine’s Day) — every one of them silently shapes state. The work is to bring those into consciousness so they stop ruling.

Two mechanisms make conditioning trainable rather than mystical:

  • The brain does not distinguish vividly imagined from real. This means emotion is not something you wait for — it can be engineered. Repetition + intensity + multimodal anchors (notification + smell + music + journal + voice + body) install the link. After enough repetitions the single trigger re-creates the full state, Pavlov-style.
  • Conditioning earns its return only where the friction is loudest. What limits you most, what generates the most friction, what you like least about today — that is where the conditioning stack pays back. Everywhere else, it is noise.

The image is the elite skier at the start gate — in pyjamas versus suited up — and the automatic gearbox where one grain of sand changes the whole shift. Yann on 2026-02-13: that belief is the small grain of sand that explodes the gearbox — Johan’s printer at the gate. The WOW: on 2026-02-25 Marie-Christine names it in the room — conditioning shrinks the future unless the automatic brakes are named and lifted long enough to hold the vision.

Your move this week

This week’s micro-action (24–72 hours):

  1. Identify the one place in your life where the friction is loudest.
  2. Name the version who would clear it.
  3. Install three anchors — one physical, one sensory, one ritual — and run them every day for seven days before that situation.
  4. At the end of the week, read the seven moments and calibrate whether the version who needed to show up actually showed up.
