Working definition

Lag vs Lead is the discipline of measuring not the outcome of the Battle but the daily action that produces it — so the calibration loop can still influence what it points at.

How it works

Every Battle has two measurable surfaces:

  • The lag measure is the result — fewer emails CC’d to me at the end of the week, the partner I no longer fight with on Sunday, the body that lost five kilograms by April. It is what arrives at the end of the run. Yann’s vocabulary: la résultante, la vanité métrique — true but useless for action, because it can only be observed, not influenced.
  • The Lead Measure is the daily move that produces the result — each time a new context arose, did I communicate the protocol; each time the partner triggered me, did I run the interoception switch; each meal, did I serve the body what the body asked. It is where the agency lives. Yann’s vocabulary: le lit de mesure, c’est où est-ce que j’agis au quotidien pour que ça se réalise.

The discipline is to calibrate the lead, not the lag. The lag tells you whether you won; the lead is what you can still move today. Calibrating the lag is essentially reading the result tape — it produces relief or disappointment, never action. Calibrating the lead produces the next move within the same day, while there is still time to influence the outcome.

The trap is the seduction of vanity metrics. The result number is satisfying — it is concrete, it ranks well in conversation, it can be screenshotted. But it is structurally incapable of being influenced once it lands. Pair every lag with its lead, and the loop closes.

Your move this week

This week’s micro-action (24–72 hours):

  1. Lag: What does the result look like at the end of the week?
  2. Lead: What is the one daily action that produces it?
