Working definition

FOPO is fear of other people’s opinions — the reflex that lets an imaginary audience veto your calendar, your prep, your no, or your ask before Be Your Real Boss gets a vote.

How it works

FOPO is not shyness. It is governance borrowed from others: you run the decision through what will they think? (or will this bother them?) and treat that forecast as law.

In the Club you meet it in two layers:

LayerWhat it sounds likeWhat it costs
Surface FOPOThey will think I am late, selfish, cold, pushy, or weird.Boundaries, prep, sales asks, and focus rules never get installed.
Deeper FOPOIf I do this, I become someone I was not allowed to be.You block the version of you that would break inherited norms — even when the action is clean.

The deeper line from the room (Pascal names the acronym; Yann sharpens it): fear of the version of myself that would allow itself to do what is not supposed to be done. Standards have to evolve, or FOPO keeps defending an old script.

Operational chain (repeatable in session):

  1. Principal work is named (Battle Of the Week, prep block, sale, protected slot).
  2. Social forecast fires — often faster than fact (they will be upset).
  3. Trade goes to others-first: overfull calendar, dropped preparation, automatic yes to lunch or jam, victim posture in a comfortable room.
  4. Identity Gap widens — hours and evaluations up, coefficient on the real problem flat.

FOPO pairs with people-pleasing (behaviour organised for approval) and with the B2 censor in Be Your Real Boss — same fight, different label. Antidote doctrines in the vault: communicate the trade so lateness is not secret self-attack (Marie-Aude, 2026-03-02); machine-enforced boundaries via Manual Of Me and focus modes (2026-03-25); identity permission via Being Perceived as a Troublemaker when the fear is how I might be read, not the act itself.

Distinction: FOPO is about opinion. Interoception and anticipation fear (I am just afraid of being afraid) are adjacent — the event may be fine; the imagined audience or the imagined future self does the damage before Monday.

Signature

The image is the spotlight you imagine on your face — fear of people’s opinions shrinks the Battle to performance; the move is to run the rep for tomorrow-self, not the audience — 2026-03-23.

Spatial split — audience (imagined spotlight) versus tomorrow-self (Battle rep, not performance). Your move: Your move this week.
More room passes mention this doctrine in replay narrative — search the Codex for FOPO or start from the latest entry on Weekly Sessions.

Your move this week

  1. Pick one decision you already postponed (prep, no, reschedule, ask, leave on time).
  2. Write whose opinion you are protecting — names or roles, not “people.”
  3. State the real boss move in one sentence; take one observable action in 24–72h (message, boundary, communicated trade).
  4. Score willingness if useful: How willing am I today to be the jerk (1–10)? Adjust the action, not the story.
