Definition
Devotion is placing attention and care in service of what actually animates you — not a mission statement, not an ambition score, and not a warrior identity that only knows how to fight.
Origin
Self-concordance research treats goals that express enduring interests and values as more sustainable than goals adopted for appearance or pressure (Sheldon & Elliot, 1999). Self-determination theory names the social conditions that keep that offering intrinsic rather than a fight you are tired of winning (Ryan & Deci, 2000). Contemplative traditions use devotion for a sustained offering of attention, not a spike of will. Club language sits between those two: a third word when mission and ambition have been named and the day still feels like combat.
Mechanism
Three words get collapsed.
- Mission. A direction you can say in public. It can be true and still empty of care.
- Ambition. A climb. It can move a metric and still be a fight you are tired of winning.
- Devotion. The soul — attention, time, affection — placed on what animates. The question is not where will I fight today but where did I put enough love, and did I follow it.
Warrior-as-default is the failure mode of a life that learned combat first. The combat can be internal and external at once. Devotion does not cancel a chosen Battle Of the Week. It changes the pole: the week can be a fight for a life you love, not a personality that only knows how to fight. Adjacent, not the same: Personal Alignment System (SAP) is the rail that keeps the question on the essential; Intention Behind the Move is the morning sentence; devotion is what the sentence is in service of.
Epistemic boundary: this note does not claim that softness replaces adversity, or that devotion is a religious requirement. It claims that mission, ambition, and devotion are different relations to the same week.

Fight default vs care placed — combat is not devotion.
Applications
- When the default question is where will I fight, ask the quieter one once: where did I put enough care.
- Pair with Permission to live when the warrior is protecting a life that is still unauthorized.
- Pair with Drift Bumpers when midday return is how devotion stays on the rail.
Failure modes
- Collector trap: defining devotion instead of placing one hour on what animates.
- Overclaim trap: calling every pleasant feeling devotion and dropping the Battle.
- Test today: write one devotion question. Run it once in place of the warrior question.
