Working definition
A reward system is the conscious, arena-specific way you mark completed effort so biology keeps funding the climb — the twin of recovery, not a treat for every errand.
How it works
You already have unconscious rewards (ice cream after friction, Netflix as collapse). Mastery means naming them — and designing your stack for the arena where you tear the silk-fiber ceiling, not for grocery runs.
Pure effort with no reward teaches the biological brain the loop is broken. Pair with recovery: no recovery → burn; no reward → quit. The reward can be material (bracelet, device), sensory, rest, or self-regard — what matters is the rule: when this effort ships, this reward unlocks.
Also name the anti-reward: the failure strategy that freezes or punishes you instead of marking the win. That is mastery of the same dial in reverse.
Distinction from The Victory Journal: the Journal logs evidence; the reward system pays the nervous system for the effort so the next exposure is fundable. Distinction from Celebrate Micro-Deaths: celebration can be momentary; a reward system is a standing rule you can state in one sentence.

Spatial split — errand treat (every friction · loop broken) versus gated reward (arena ships · then unlock). Your move: Your move this week.
Your move this week
- Write three lines: my recovery · my reward for this week’s principal arena · when it unlocks.
- After one hard effort this week, deliver the reward within the same day (or honour the gate if locked).
- Optional: name one unconscious anti-reward you will stop using as punishment.

Reward is not one blob — liking · wanting · learning dissociate (Berridge). Conscious reward design marks completed effort so wanting stays attached to the climb; pair with psychological detachment recovery so the twin stack does not collapse into burnout.
