Working definition

Active recall is forcing the brain to retrieve an answer before exposure — production, not recognition, is what wires the circuit.

How it works

You often re-read notes and call it study. If you only recognises answers in the margin has not paid the metabolic cost of memory. Active recall inverts the order: question first, answer second, correction third.

In the Club stack, recall shows up in three places:

  1. Morning ritual — short stack before principal work (pairs with Flashcard and Morning Voice).
  2. Battle preparation — you state the week’s move without reading the script.
  3. Pattern detection — cards like what pattern shows up in my closings? force production before the next live room.

Distinction from DiSSS: DiSSS deconstructs the skill map; active recall trains one slice until evidence-tier automaticity (Conditioning).

The image is the empty victory card — Yann on 2026-02-02: reaching a Victory Journal prompt and finding no answer is not shame; it is instrumentation. Skipping a victory because it feels too small cuts the feedback loop that was about to wire the capacity you are growing.
More room passes mention this doctrine in replay narrative — search the Codex for Active Recall or start from the latest entry on Weekly Sessions.

Production before exposure — empty card signal on The Victory Journal. Your move: Your move this week.

Your move this week

This week’s micro-action (24–72 hours):

  1. Pick one question your Battle depends on this week (write it on a card).
  2. Attempt the answer aloud without notes — thirty seconds maximum.
  3. Only then open your reference and mark right / partial / blank.
  4. If blank, schedule three repeats in the next seventy-two hours (same question).
  5. Log one line in your private notes: what the blank revealed about drift.
