Definition
The matrix is the named knowledge base that makes perception usable — categories, distinctions, and causal maps against which raw signal is filtered.
Origin
In expertise accounts, novices and elites differ not only in hours but in structured knowledge that organises what they notice. Deliberate practice assumes a representation of the skill to improve against (Ericsson et al., 1993).
Mechanism
Perceptivity without a matrix is undifferentiated sensitivity. The matrix supplies labels — “this is SPOF,” “this is variety-seeking,” “this is afferent alarm” — so signal becomes actionable. Building the matrix before the full action exists means reverse-engineering reference performances into bricks.
Applications
- Before shipping: name the chain links you will score.
- In coaching: share vocabulary so feedback has a shared map.
- In self-review: ask “what worked in my production chain?” not only “what worked in the product?”
