Definition
The nervous system is the integrated network — central and peripheral, autonomic and somatic — that senses, predicts, and mobilizes response. Felt mood is one readout of its state, not a separate realm from biology.
Origin
Neuroscience treats cognition, emotion, and autonomic regulation as coupled systems on one anatomical stack — from brainstem and spinal cord through peripheral nerves and endocrine interfaces.
Mechanism
Sympathetic mobilization (fight/flight), parasympathetic recovery (rest/digest), and vagal tone shape interoceptive clarity. Chronic threat bias narrows perception; repeated graded exposure retunes prediction (see Mithridatisation). Chemistry (body chemistry) sits on this hardware. Polyvagal and autonomic models are widely applied but not uniformly validated at every measurement step — pair theory with observable signals (sleep, arousal, recovery) rather than state labels alone.
Applications
Log one nervous-system signal in a personal capture practice (sleep, heart rate, gut, nasal pattern, boredom). Pair Polyvagal Tone when safety and accessibility are the question. Train cognition and autonomic regulation as one stack — not separate moral realms.
