Definition
Homeostasis is active regulation toward viable internal ranges — the body is in constant negotiation, not silent equilibrium.
Origin
Walter Cannon formalised homeostasis as the organised physiology that holds temperature, glucose, arousal, and related variables in livable bands (The Wisdom of the Body). Later allostasis adds that stability often requires change — predictive adjustment and cumulative load (McEwen 1998).
Mechanism
Inner conflict between approach and rest, charge and ease, rigid and supple maps onto regulatory work you do not moralise when it is autonomic — yet you moralise the same negotiation when it appears as relationship or career friction. Naming constant negotiation for homeostasis reduces shame: the organism is supposed to adjust.
Be Your Own Limits uses the bike image — equilibrium as perpetual disequilibrium. Outer problem quality (Problem quality) asks whether the fight you choose adds load you want versus load fear assigns.
Example
Your body holds tension before a hard conversation — heart rate up, jaw set — and you call yourself weak for feeling it. The same week you do not moralise the fatigue after a long run; you call that training. Inner negotiation is already running; you only punish it when the stake is relational. Naming constant negotiation for homeostasis lets you ask whether the outer fight is chosen load or fear-assigned load. That is B3 miss when you moralise the inner swing but skip the quality of the outer Battle.

Stress education, habit change, and leadership: distinguish regulatory noise from chosen adversity. Pair Cannon with McEwen when teaching long-run load, not single-session arousal.
Failure modes
- Calm as default myth — treating stillness as the healthy baseline and pathologising normal regulatory swings.
- Biology excuse — it’s just homeostasis to avoid naming a fear-assigned problem you could choose differently.
- Load blindness — citing single-session arousal while ignoring cumulative allostatic load over seasons.
