Definition

The future self is not a poster — it is a sharp enough picture of tomorrow’s behaviour, standards, and subtractions that you can answer: what does she need me to remove today?

Origin

Prospection research treats future thinking as a trainable simulation — distinct from Future self bias, which names the failure mode of treating future-you as a stranger.

Mechanism

Clarity on the future self makes remove-to-add decisions tractable: without the picture, subtraction feels like loss; with it, subtraction reads as installation. Questions that sharpen the image: if everything were possible, what would I do differently? what has future-me already removed?

Applications

Write from future-self POV once per Weekly Review; list already removed · still to remove · what I gain by removing.
