Origin
Bandura’s self-efficacy work treats belief in capability as a lever on persistence and strategy choice. Carver and Scheier’s control-theory synthesis maps human self-regulation to discrepancy-reducing feedback loops — reference standard, monitored input, corrective action.
Mechanism
A personal operating system needs three engineered pieces: standards (what “on track” means), sensors (logs, metrics, honest self-monitoring), and actuators (rituals, environment design, skills practice). Bandura adds that without efficacy belief the loop stalls even when the blueprint is clear. Carver and Scheier’s bulletin is widely applied but not uncontested — a modest contrasting tally reflects ongoing debate about loop architecture and affect-as-velocity claims.
