Definition
Pattern detective names the trained stance of spotting recurring mechanics — flight, sabotage, success — in yourself and others before the story hardens.
Origin
Flavell (1979) opened metacognition as monitoring and regulating one’s own cognitive processes — separate from being fused with the story. Koriat and colleagues (2014) show metacognitive monitoring during learning is not one uniform skill: goal-driven and data-driven self-regulation produce different judgment patterns — the detective must know which mode is running.
Coaching and psychotherapy lineages add pattern recognition over one-off explanations: what repeats across contexts is more diagnostic than what happened once.
Mechanism
The detective does not judge first — measures and names. Inputs split across interoception (inside signal) and exteroception (outside signal). Journaling and hourly checks supply data; the skill is choosing what to measure so the dataset stays usable.
Misread risk: treating a comfort heuristic (data-driven ease) as proof the pattern is solved, or chasing goal-driven metrics that never update when the saboteur shifts target.
Applications
Train on low-stakes reps before high-stakes battles: log flight moves, cadre breaks, and coherence lines before debating life strategy. Pair with Johari window cartography — some patterns stay blind until another pane opens.
Failure modes
- Story before data — narrating why once instead of logging what repeats three Tuesdays in a row.
- Wrong regulation mode — interpreting ease as mastery (data-driven trap) or effort hours as progress without a named metric (goal-driven trap).
- Other-blame only — reading patterns in others while skipping the same mechanic on your own cadre.
