Definition
The layer beneath articulate story: pré-langage reactions, survival standards, and couple buttons before semantic anchoring.
Origin
Jung’s archetypal layer and Neumann’s origins of consciousness narrative treat pre-verbal psychic material as structurally prior to ego narrative — not pathology by default, but material that fires before language catches up. Contemporary somatic and attachment work maps the same sequence: body spike → story afterward.
Mechanism
- Triggers arrive as body-first spikes; naming comes later.
- Noise or motion can function as escape from welcoming what is present.
- Stop → separate → return protocols train being before doing when this layer fires — pair with Being vs doing and Infantile conflict loops for couple and developmental frames.
Applications
Use the label when conflict or shutdown precedes the story the person can tell — map body timing before policy or identity debate.
