Definition
Antifragility is the property of gaining from volatility that does not break you — stronger after stress within the repair zone.
Origin
Nassim Taleb, Antifragile (2012) — a popular coinage, not a formal scientific construct. Built on options thinking: convex payoffs, tail awareness, and scepticism toward models that ignore ruin. Biological hormesis (dosed stress that strengthens) is a separate literature — useful analogy, not identity.

Bounds matter. Unbounded stress breaks even adaptive systems; dose and recovery windows define the useful band. Mithridatisation names biological hormesis; sizing discipline keeps the label operational rather than decorative. Taleb’s frame is prescriptive philosophy — test claims against observable dose and recovery, not branding.
Applications
When someone claims antifragility, ask for this week’s stress dose and predicted discomfort — observable reps, not philosophy. Pair convexity thinking with explicit ruin constraints (what would end the game).
