Working definition
Mental muscle soreness is the discomfort of staying inside the rep you would flee — observation, silence, non-performing focus — so the new circuit can myelinate; pleasure on the path, not joy deferred until the lag outcome.
How it works
Physical training has a familiar signal: you finish the set and feel soreness the next day — proof the muscle adapted. Mental muscle soreness names the cognitive analogue: the tug between performing productivity and appreciating what is already here when you force yourself to stay.
On 2026-07-03, Branka asks for Yann’s examples. He offers Tuesday: urge to leave the house for novelty, drive, turn back, sit in silence on the couch — fighting the part that wants to perform focus while the rep is to observe. That friction is the soreness.
The rep pairs with pleasure on the path — not suffering until the podcast exists, not hero weeks without lightness. Myelin effort follows repeated intensity inside the chosen cadre; without soreness you added another doudou, not effort.
Use with Battle Of the Week: one weekly rep that should feel mentally sore — bounded, logged, not dramatised.
Example
Tuesday you plan a silence rep — thirty minutes observe without performing focus. Eight minutes in you reach for the phone to just check one thread; the body treats stillness as failure. You stay; the friction in your chest is the signal, not proof you picked wrong. That is B3 miss — you almost exited the rep the saboteur wanted gone.
Failure modes
- Performing the rep — staying busy inside the block while fleeing the observation the rep demands.
- Comfort stacking — adding a second ritual in the same hour that exits the soreness signal.
- Deferred joy — treating soreness as tax to pay until the lag trophy arrives — breaks pleasure on the path.
Signature
Branka on 2026-07-03: what are the mental muscle sorenesses you have had? — Yann answers from the silence rep, not from a trophy. The Battle closes on effort + pleasure together.

Performing versus observing — stay until soreness shows. Your move: Your move this week.
Your move this week
- Pick one rep you would flee (silence, observation, camera-on, bounded block).
- Stay inside the rep until soreness shows — one line in Voicenotes: what I wanted to escape · what I stayed with.
- Do not add a second comfort ritual in the same hour — that exits effort.

Mechanism detail: subjective soreness maps to myelin effort — repetition plus intensity in the circuit you would flee, not performative busywork.
