Definition
A vanity metric feels like progress while leaving the Identity Gap untouched — busy, visible, and unsteerable today.
Origin
Analytics culture — page views, follower counts, step totals without a decision rule. Coaching shorthand vanité métrique often sits beside lag measures that report yesterday while tonight’s move stays empty.
Partially subsumed into Lag vs Lead Measure doctrine — this note keeps the warning label when dashboards outrun tonight’s move.
Mechanism
Quick test:
- Can you act on it before sleep? If no → likely vanity or lag-only.
- Does improving it force the uncomfortable move? If no → suspect theatre.
- Would you hide the number from someone who holds you accountable? If yes → name that shame.
Applications
Redirect dashboards that do not connect to a lead behaviour this week — one controllable rep beats vanity theatre.
