Definition
A single point of failure is a component that, if it fails, stops the whole system — the weak link to identify before you scatter effort across ten comfortable fronts.
Origin
Reliability engineering and distributed-systems design treat SPOF analysis as baseline hygiene: redundant paths, failover, and deliberate removal of lone fragile nodes. The metaphor migrated to personal operating systems when one habit, belief, or revenue step collapses everything downstream.
Mechanism
Cascade failure starts at one node. Peripheral optimisation — better branding, nicer tools — does not help if the bottleneck link stays unnamed. In coaching translation: map the chain from aim to outcome; ask which step, if it fails, voids the rest.
Pair with Flight strategies when the weak link is avoidance, and with Independence lever when the weak link is commercial.
Applications
- Revenue: one missing skill (closing, offer clarity, outreach) stalls independence despite busy motion.
- Focus: Dispersion in the first five minutes can be the SPOF for deep work blocks.
- Systems: member routing keys (CRM join key) are organisational SPOFs at scale.
Failure modes
- Polishing peripherals — ten comfortable improvements while the bottleneck link stays unnamed.
- False redundancy — backup plans that do not actually remove the weak node.
- Metaphor without map — calling everything a SPOF without tracing aim → outcome chain.
