Definition
Mental muscle soreness names the subjective friction of staying in a demanding cognitive or observational rep — the felt cost before the circuit feels normal.
Origin
Kool and colleagues show people systematically avoid cognitively demanding options in free choice — the law of less work extends to controlled processing. Skill-learning neuroscience (Lakhani et al., 2016; Gibson et al., 2014) links repeated task-relevant engagement to measurable circuit change — subjective strain sits upstream of that plasticity.
Mechanism
Distinct from physical soreness but analogous: after forcing observation over performance (silence, non-scrolling focus, camera-on before polish), a residual discomfort appears — tug toward escape, self-judgment, or pseudo-productivity. Kool’s demand-selection findings treat that tug as anticipated cognitive cost, not moral failure.
Repeated exposure with recovery builds tolerance and engages activity-dependent plasticity; one-off heroics do not. Homéostasis seeks comfort; growth reps temporarily violate it. Pair strain with intrinsic reward on the path so the system does not learn effort equals misery until goal.
Applications
Log soreness after bounded reps — scale 1–5 — alongside myelin effort frequency. Distinguish soreness from injury: stop when dissociation or shutdown, not when ego sting.
Failure modes
- Soreness as stop signal — interpreting every friction tug as proof the rep is wrong path.
- Heroic once — one brutal session with no recovery cadence — no circuit consolidation.
- Misery-only pairing — effort without on-path reward — brain learns to avoid the whole category.
