Definition
Ketosis is a metabolic condition in which the liver produces ketone bodies for fuel — often after carbohydrate restriction or prolonged fasting — accompanied by distinct hunger, clarity, and adaptation sensations.
Origin
When hepatic glycogen is depleted, fatty-acid oxidation rises and acetoacetate, β-hydroxybutyrate, and acetone supply alternative fuel for brain and muscle. Time-restricted eating can produce mild ketosis for part of the day without full clinical protocols.
Mechanism
Early fasting triggers hunger, headache, and social friction. Adaptation over days shifts subjective energy signals — meaning must match effort or the behavioural loop stops.
