Definition
Environment cue sculpting is redesigning friction, visibility, and default paths in space so the wanted behaviour triggers without renegotiating character each morning.
Origin
Habit theory (Wood & Neal, 2007) shows contexts directly cue learned responses without mediating goals. Behaviour-design practice adds make-it-obvious / make-it-hard levers on the same mechanism.
Mechanism
| Lever | Effect |
|---|---|
| Visibility | Wanted behaviour in the visual path |
| Friction | Unwanted behaviour costs extra steps |
| Context stability | Same cue → same response strengthens association |
Ecosystem includes physical space — a 20% slice is often room layout, not life overhaul.
Applications
Before a willpower battle, change one cue in the environment (phone out of bedroom, kit visible, default app removed). Log the cue change in Manual Of Me as a recipe.
