Definition
Down-regulation is deliberate reduction of sympathetic mobilisation — shifting toward parasocial safety and recovery tone so cognition can re-engage.
Origin
Autonomic neuroscience frames behaviour as state-dependent: mobilisation and shutdown lock out strategy until the ladder shifts. Polyvagal theory links vagal regulation to social engagement and calm access (with contested extensions — pair carefully).
Mechanism
Breath, extended exhale, cold, rhythmic movement, and rehearsed anchors increase parasympathetic markers such as heart-rate variability when practiced consistently — Energy switch is the operational checklist; down-regulation is the autonomic target. Interoceptive accuracy helps you detect when mobilisation is still running while you pretend to think (Garfinkel 2015).
Down-regulation is tactical; Allostatic Reset remains structural when load is cumulative.
Example
Before a hard conversation on empty reserves, you rehearse arguments with shallow breath and tight shoulders — mobilisation still running while you pretend to think. One extended exhale and posture reset shifts the room. That is B3 miss — you almost decided inside peak arousal.
Applications
Before a hard conversation or decision on empty reserves, run one down-regulation rep (breath + posture + phrase) and note HRV or subjective calm shift.
