Abstract

Vazire’s self–other knowledge asymmetry (SOKA) model shows that neither the self nor others have full access to a person: the self knows internal, hard-to-observe traits better, while others often judge highly observable and evaluative traits more accurately — giving an empirical structure to the idea that we have genuine blind spots.

Key findings

  • Asymmetry of access — Self and others each hold privileged information; accuracy depends on the trait, not on a global “who knows best.”
  • Observability matters — Others judge highly observable behaviours (e.g. talkativeness) well; the self holds the edge on internal states (e.g. anxiety).
