Definition
The determinism challenge questions one-gene-one-fate stories by showing context-dependent expression and behavioural feedback on physiology.
Origin
Classical genetic determinism oversimplified complex traits. Epigenetics and developmental systems theory document plasticity within constraint — popular science (e.g. Biology of Belief) popularises the challenge; mainstream genetics remains the calibration anchor.
Mechanism
DNA sequence sets bounds; methylation, histone marks, and environment shift which genes express when. Behaviour change alters stress physiology — bidirectional, not unidirectional fate.
The challenge is not “genes do not matter” — it is that expression is context-sensitive (Jaenisch & Bird, 2003). Pop wellness sometimes over-extends that into belief-as-biology; the library anchor stays narrower.
