Origin
Mainstream epigenetics documents environment → gene-expression coupling (Jaenisch & Bird). Popular volumes such as Biology of Belief extend the frame toward perceived belief as signal — contested in magnitude; read beside genetics textbooks.
Mechanism
Environmental and interpretive signals modulate expression and physiology. Agency narratives use this to counter genetic fatalism; overreach treats every belief as deterministic biology — boundary needed.
Epigenetic plasticity is real within sequence bounds — Jaenisch and Bird (2003) emphasize diet and environment as inputs on methylation and histone marks, not proof that coaching metaphors alone rewrite the genome.
Applications
Separate what is constrained (sequence, disease risk) from what is tunable (stress load, sleep, exposure). Track one week: signal → body state → choice before moral self-attack.
