Definition
Cognitive decompression is the intentional release of task load and perseverative thought after intense cognitive work — not idleness, but regulated downshift.
Origin
Recovery research distinguishes absence of work from mental disengagement — decompression names the cognitive half of that shift when attention keeps rehearsing unfinished loops.
Mechanism
High job stress impairs Psychological Detachment; rumination extends effective workload into off-hours and blocks resource rebound (Meijman & Mulder effort-recovery frame). Decompression tactics — walk without optimisation, sensory anchor, Non-Sleep Deep Rest (NSDR), bounded capture-then-close — reduce perseveration so Metacognition can observe without fusing to the loudest sentence.
Event importance and rumination lengthen emotional tails — decompression targets the rumination tail, not only the peak.
Example
You finish a heavy block and open the next task within ninety seconds — attention never cleared, only changed topic. That is B3 miss — you skipped decompression and carried rumination forward.
Applications
After a heavy block, run a five-minute decompression ritual before opening the next task — log whether attention actually cleared or only shifted topic.
