Origin
Clinical medicine uses biomarkers to index disease risk and treatment response. Stress-load research extends the frame: cumulative adaptation wear (allostatic load) manifests in multi-system markers when recovery chronically lags demand.
Mechanism
Wearables and labs translate subjective hacks into falsifiable tests — resting heart rate, sleep stages, glucose variability, inflammatory proxies — when devices sync to a second brain with known lag and noise. Hall and colleagues frame energy balance as dynamic biology, not a fixed dial — biomarkers sit on that map when you state what you are testing and what would falsify the experiment.
