Definition
To phagocytise energy is to let low-value commitments consume the week’s focus until the principal problem starves.
Origin
Conservation-of-resources theory treats stress as threat to valued resources (time, attention, self-worth). Self-regulation research adds that volitional acts may draw on shared capacity — a useful metaphor for scattered inputs eating the stack.
Mechanism
Resource drain: each low-value yes, notification loop, or side quest spends attention and self-regulation before the declared priority gets a rep. Hobfoll’s model predicts spirals when losses compound faster than recovery.
Depletion metaphor: Baumeister’s ego-depletion line argued that prior self-control reduces persistence on later tasks. Large meta-analytic replications failed to reproduce the effect reliably — treat depletion as a coaching shorthand for scattered spend, not a proven daily fuel gauge. COR (resource loss) remains the sturdier spine for prioritization work.
